dc.description.abstractOver the years, various techniques related to utility management in the process industry have been produced. Graphical and mathematical techniques have been proposed to manage the utilization and management of utilities in industrial processing plants and refineries. Optimum utility management can support the need for clean fuel production in oil refineries by maximizing resources, utilizing the utility efficiency and by reusing, recycling and minimizing waste. This work focuses on data sharing and integration of several applications in process engineering design. It proposes a new design and model for data sharing on which new process design environments may be based using data models, data handling, program control and integration. A system called Integrated Process Engineering and Management System (IPEMS) has been developed which uses Visual Basic for Applications (VBA) approach to data management and sharing between different software packages. It utilizes templates which imitate specification sheets used in process simulation for defining objects in a design environment. The use of the method promotes a consistent look and feel to the tools in the environment. It is believed that the findings on the optimization of the two case studies addressed in this work enable a more effective information exchange and application development in the engineering analysis process. Thus, IPEMS provides sharing and transfer of classified objects and their data types that are typically used in SimulationCase of Aspen HYSYS simulator to integrate these data with the General Algebraic Modeling System (GAMS) compatible module. The method and tools used have been verified in prototype system for querying engineering information
