Single ply triaxially woven (TW) fabric composites have recently been found to be superior to single ply unidirectional (UD) composite in terms of their mass reduction, flexibility, out-of-plane stiffness, toughness, shear and tearing resistance. The most common failure in the sandwich honeycomb composite (SHC) structures is the top skin compressive failure leading to the crushing of the core when exposed to static or impact load. Therefore, this study aims to carry out experimental and numerical investigation using ABAQUS 6.13 on the fracture behavior of SHC beams subjected to bending under four-point loading with consideration of the damage effects of the novel triaxially woven fabric composite skins. The failure loads and mechanisms of SHC beams were predicted by means of the mechanics of material models and compared with those from the experimental study. Different stacking sequences of the carbon fiber reinforcement polymer (CFRP) laminate layers; i.e., 0-direction of TW (TW0), 0-direction of UD (UD0), and 90-direction of UD (UD90) were studied; from which SHC beam behaviors reinforced with TW0/UD0 or TW0/UD90 laminated skins were compared with those reinforced with conventional UD0/90. Equations predicting the failure loads causing skin crack extension were analytically derived and then numerically developed for different crack lengths by employing the integral approach to determine the shape factor for more general use.
