dc.description.abstractSignificant number of research have been conducted on the use of Cold Formed Steel (CFS) as a composite beam. Failures in CFS due to the thinness of the section have contributed to the failures due to torsional, distortional, lateral-torsional, lateral-distortional and local buckling. The next problem is force transfers in composite structures depending on the strength and stiffness of various components of the composite beam as well as shear connectors. Therefore, this study proposes an alternative and innovative composite beams using lipped C-Channel and rebar shear connecter to form into composite construction. Experimental work proposed consisted of specimen with different parameters was varied based on beam depth of 250 mm and 300 mm, the use of re-bar 16 mm and 20 mm as reinforcement in tension zone and the use of U-shaped re-bar of 12 mm to act as shear connectors. This can be achieved by arranging two CFS of Lipped C-Channel sections to form into an I-section (arranged as back-to-back (BB) and to form into boxed-section (arranged as toe-to-toe (TT) where these sections are partially encased with Self Compacting Concrete (SCC). The proposed composite beam specimens are arranged as simply supported with effective length of 4000 mm measured from support to support with 750 mm slab width. A point load is applied to a spreader beam which distributed as two-point loads at 1000 mm from the support which formed into a four-point bending test on the tested specimen. The experimental results of the proposed section have contributed to an alternative and innovative of composite beams, where the slip examination between slab concrete and CFS beam shows a final slip value smaller than 6 mm as required by Eurocode 4 (EC4) which normally for final slip for all specimens in the study which gives a value of not more than 0.63 mm at elastic load, 1.13 mm at final load and 2.3 mm at failure. For comparison purposes it was found that the proposed composite of CFS is stiffer than the previous specimens with initial stiffness values in the range between 1.5 and 2.7 higher. The proposed composite beam with BB orientation have successfully contributed to a significant increase in moment resistance of 133.5% greater compared to TT oriented beams. The ductility ratio for BB orientation with CFS cross-sectional beams is in the range between 1.16 and 1.65 higher than the TT oriented beam. The resistance moment guided by EC4 was generated and compared with the experimental moment. For BB orientation the comparison rate was 1.02 and for TT orientation the comparison rate was 1.05. The results of the above experiments tests have concluded that the BB orientation of an I-shaped sectional configuration showed better performance than the box-shaped TT orientation. The proposed composite beam of CFS with SCC have successfully reduced local failures and significantly increased the stiffness and the ductility in the proposed composite beam system. The proposed innovation of CFS section partially wrapped with SCC as well as longitudinal rebar with shear connector using U-shaped rebar has been successfully proposed, serves as a new construction and can be recommended method for Industrial Building System (IBS).
