University-industry collaboration in development research at research university in Malaysia

dc.description.abstractIn Malaysia, the level of university-industry collaboration in general is still low. Besides, the barriers during collaboration lead to difficulties for the researchers to meet project aims and objectives. This study aims to propose a framework for effective university-industry R&D collaboration, particularly during the development research stage in Malaysia. Therefore this study is conducted to identify the types of barriers in university-industry collaboration during development research stage and to determine the relationship among the different barriers toward success. Besides that, this study also identifies significant differences between university and industry success level in such collaboration during development research stage. The research was conducted in sequential approach of quantitative and qualitative. Quantitative research method applied survey questionnaire involving 99 respondents while qualitative research applied semi-structured interviews with 8 project leaders in order to provide additional information and support the results generated in quantitative study. The respondents consist of university and industrial researchers who were involved in MOSTI‘s TechnoFund projects conducted during 2006-2013. The quantitative data was analysed through SPSS 16.0 and SmartPLS 3.2.1 while qualitative data was analysed through content analysis. The empirical evidence showed that researchers faced more orientation related barriers (ORB) followed by intellectual property related barriers (IPRB), time related barriers (TRB) and operational related barriers (OPRB). In addition, the IPRB has significant negative relationship with process related criteria (PRC). Management skills (MS) have significant negative relationship with TRB meanwhile reward (RWD) has significant negative relationship with ORB. However, MS and RWD have significant positive relationship with the level of success. Results also indicated that there are significant differences in perception between university and industrial researchers on the level of success for their collaboration project. Drawing upon these findings, this study offers several important theoretical and practical implications. This study contributes to the university-industry collaboration literature, opens up new area for future research in university-industry collaboration fields and provides guidelines or ideas to help the policy makers, funder (MOSTI) and government to improve the collaboration between university and industry particularly during development research stage in Malaysia.
